Water: Managing a strategic resource


Water is critical to the energy industry, especially for oil and gas extraction. But water issues carry significant risk and require strategic planning, write Rakesh Jaggi, Muqait Ashraf and Hemes Alvarez.

Global population growth and economic expansion will bring a huge increase in energy consumption and drive a significant increase in demand for scarce water resources. Most industry agencies, including the International Energy Agency, predict oil and gas will meet the majority of world energy demand for the foreseeable future.

Intense competition for water, both from the agricultural and industrial sectors, will amplify an already growth problem: global water scarcity. This is compounded by the large volumes of water consumed to generate energy and a vast amount of energy required to extract, process and deliver clean water.
